I bought it for myself for Christmas and I've recently begun playing it. And so far, I can't say I love it.

Just. Idk. It's very... trope-y. And I mean even more so than your average Jrpg. It's all so formulaic, it actually makes me cringe a lot. To be fair, I've only gotten up to Chapter 4, so it's early to judge - but, like. So far all of the characters annoy me the fuck off. Surprisingly, the character I thought least likely to be my favourite, ended up being my favourite.

Sazh is the only character who doesn't make me want to scream and throw my remote at the screen. In fact, he actually kind of addresses how ridiculous some of the others are and it's pretty gold most of the time. Yeah, I like him.

Vanille, I could do without. I mean, I have no problem with the Bubbly, Energetic Girl! trope (in fact, some of my favourites from previous games fell under this heading), but like frig, she pisses me off.

Also, what the fuck is her weapon? It's like a fishing rod with antlers. Are you for real, Square Enix? Really?

Ugh.

And then there's Captain Delicious over here



Goddamn, just look at this guy. But then he opens his mouth and screams, "Seeerrraaahhhh" and just shut up and look good, damnit. His relationship with his fiance (who is probably 15, what the hell) is actually one of my biggest squicks about the game. Not that I'm adverse to romance or age-difference in pairings, but it's just handled so clumsily. Whereas you had the Yuna/Tidus relationship grow organically and over time, with these two?

I'm sorry, but that's just poor storytelling, straight up.

Anyway, so yeah. I don't know how I feel about it just yet, but I'll keep playing and we'll see what happens I guess. :/
